"Imagine if this was a PE course and as opposed to making use of footballs and rugby balls they made unique gear. It just wouldn't occur in a million years, " says the classical pianist and TV presenter James Rhodes inside the new show cannot end the Music. He is standing inside hall at Roysia middle school in Hertfordshire seeing students perform a number from musical Stomp on improvised tools such as laundry baskets, dustbin lids, margarine tubs and tin cans.

But as songs instructor Amanda Mitchell points out, as she reveals him the college tool cabinet – which contains a broken cello, a trumpet, a few recorders and a set of tubular bells made from copper piping – with a spending plan of only £2.20 per kid for songs, she only has got to handle.

Within the Channel 4 show, which starts a few weeks, Rhodes explores the "surprising state" of music knowledge in schools in England and launches a campaign to reverse exactly what he sees as "years of neglect". While he went to "30 or 40" schools as an element of their analysis, the programme makes a speciality of St Teresa's, a Catholic primary in Essex which, just before Rhodes's arrival, had no instruments with no cover music. "There were no general music classes – songs lessons would include having another training, perhaps history or geography, and having a CD on into the background … so nothing about composers or how to review music, " he recalls.

The two-part programme, filmed over a nine-month period, uses Rhodes while he works together 22 12 months 5 young ones who are provided devices, no-cost tuition and possibilities to hear live songs – with apparently impressive outcomes.

In the 1st event, the children go into the college hall for system in order to find the Southbank Sinfonia sitting there."You see their faces, virtually arms with their mouths, only endured here becoming assaulted by this music – as well as sit back, many of them are crying, their particular mouths available, " states Rhodes remembering the programme.

"from the thinking, 'Within two weeks, you men would be doing the same thing – you will end up playing in construction, in an orchestra.' In addition they didn't think it, the educators don't think it, the moms and dads don't believe it … 17 days later on, they played Beethoven in system."

Together with his trainers, skinny jeans and trendy spectacles, Rhodes, 39, is not your typical traditional pianist. He refuses to perform in a match, plays at unconventional venues, eg London's Roundhouse and 100 Club, chats into market about the repertoire among pieces, and describes Rachmaninov, Chopin and Liszt as "the first rock performers". For him, learning an instrument isn't only about acquiring technical skills – it may be transformative, he claims.
